UK Weather: Severe flooding and winter weather disrupts life across UK, 60 rescued | World News
Heavy rain and snow caused flooding, school closures, and travel disruptions in several areas of UK on Monday. Dozens of people were rescued from flooded homes and cars, and hundreds of schools were closed.
Floods reported in several areas
Flooding was reported in several regions, particularly in Leicestershire and Lincolnshire, where major incidents were declared. In rural areas, vast stretches of farmland were submerged, with rows of hedges emerging from muddy waters to mark field boundaries. In Yalding, Kent, southeast of London, the Little Venice trailer park was surrounded by floodwaters.
Meanwhile, snow blanketed the hills of northern England and parts of Scotland, creating a picturesque winter scene.
Much of the UK experienced strong winds and heavy rainfall leading up to New Year’s Day, disrupting fireworks displays and other celebrations. Since the start of the year, several communities have been dealing with significant flooding.
People rescued
Nearly 60 people were rescued from flooded homes and vehicles in Leicestershire, according to the fire service. Emergency workers also rescued stranded children from a school in Edenham, Lincolnshire.
In Great Glen, Leicestershire, a pub owner rescued a woman from her flooded car. Pub manager Luigi Salcini described the incident: “She started to drive but realized the car was deeper, and she started going down with the water. She started to scream, ‘Help,’ and we came out, and Cimi went to rescue her.”
Police in North Yorkshire are investigating the death of a man found in a flooded area near the River Aire.
Transportation disruptions
Widespread transportation disruptions also occurred. Numerous train lines were closed or delayed due to flooding and fallen trees. Sections of highways and major roads were also closed.
Schools closed
Snow and ice caused school closures, primarily in northern England and parts of Scotland. Hundreds of schools were closed on the first day of classes in 2025.
Flood and snow warnings
By Monday afternoon, almost 200 flood warnings were issued in England. Snow and ice warnings remained in effect for much of the UK into Tuesday and through Wednesday for southern England.
