Rail network across UK hit by communication disruption

Rail services across the UK faced significant disruption on Friday due to a fault in the onboard communication system used between train drivers and signallers. National Rail has warned of widespread delays and cancellations, with passengers urged to check updates and allow extra time for their journeys.
The issue, which occurred during the busy morning commute, impacted major routes, including the Elizabeth Line connecting central London to Heathrow Airport and the Gatwick Express. South Western Railway explained that the fault prevents train drivers from contacting signalling centres, requiring a reset before trains can begin their journeys.
“This issue is mainly affecting trains on some routes leaving the depot to start their service. However, trains can run normally once they are underway. Short-notice cancellations and alterations are expected due to the knock-on effect on the timetables. Please check before you travel, allow extra time for your journey and monitor live departure boards,” the National Rail said in a statement.
What caused it?
The fault, which affects the GSMR radio system enabling communication between train drivers and signal operators, primarily disrupted trains leaving depots to begin service. However, trains already in motion are operating normally. National Rail confirmed, “Short-notice cancellations and alterations are expected due to the knock-on effect on timetables. Please monitor live departure boards.”
List of services impacted:

  • Elizabeth Line: Services across the entire network are impacted. Passengers are advised to wait for the next available train if their service is cancelled.
  • Northern: Passengers can use their tickets on the two Northern services immediately before or after their cancelled service.
  • South Western Railway: Customers may use local buses to continue their journey, but tickets are valid only where explicitly stated.
  • ScotRail: Passengers can travel via any reasonable route. Tickets will also be valid for collecting cars from alternative stations upon return.
