'One match at a time': Ravichandran Ashwin's evolving strategy for a demanding Test cricket season
NEW DELHI: Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is modifying his preparation for an intense Test cricket season at the age of 38. This comes after his strong performance in India’s 280-run victory against Bangladesh in the first Test at Chepauk.
Ashwin, who scored a century and took six wickets in the second innings, is now focusing on one match at a time.
“It’s tough.Sometimes when you look so far ahead, it can be quite difficult. You have to stack it up, one match at a time,” Ashwin said. He highlighted the need to have energy reserves for the forthcoming matches.Ashwin has made changes to his fitness regime to cope with the physical demands. “At 38, every bit of work has to be doubled. I’ve reduced my strength training sessions and focus more on mobility. I also do a bit of yoga,” he shared.
Ashwin praised his teammate Ravindra Jadeja, who took five wickets in the match. “Jadeja is a fire on the field. I totally admire him,” Ashwin said, talking about their evolving relationship and mutual respect. “I’ve learnt to admire him even more over the last few years. It’s a brotherly contest, but I know I can never beat Jadeja. I’m comfortable in my skin but inspired by him.”

He also commended Rishabh Pant, who scored a century on his return to Test cricket. “Rishabh’s form was never in question. The way he’s come back is miraculous. He’s entertaining and only going to get better,” Ashwin noted.
As India prepare for a busy Test cricket season, Ashwin’s experience and adaptability will play a crucial role in the team’s journey toward the potential World Test Championship Final.
