How to Work with Difficult Synastry

Synastry is the process in which two individuals’ natal charts are used in understanding how those personalities and energies might function in a relationship. In other words, it is a way of seeing if two people “click” based upon their astrological profiles. When a synastry chart indicates difficult or “tough” aspects, it merely means that you will have areas in your relationship naturally destined to be a source of tension or misunderstandings. Difficult synastry does not mean a relationship is impossible, but it does point out areas that will need much greater effort and understanding.
Hard synastry often contains square or oppositional aspects between some planets. For example, hard squares between Mars and Venus mean the attraction will be there, but the misunderstanding in romantic or physical expression will be experienced. Conflicts between the Moon and Saturn can lead to emotional estrangement or can forbid a particular person from being as outspokenly expressive as another. These tendencies might be annoying, but knowing them makes couples handle them more easily.
Establish Self-Awareness. To begin with, you should develop awareness about your positive and negative points. For instance, if you have strong emotional needs in your chart, be candid about it; let that fact be known about yourself.
Practice Empathy. If you know that your partner’s Saturn, which represents caution and restriction, influences your Moon—the representative of emotions—you may feel they are too stuffy. You could learn to understand them just a little better with that knowledge not to take things so personally.
Open Communication. Differences between you and your partner can be discussed openly by using synastry to help you better understand one another. That way, what could merely seem as one’s weakness will tend to turn into a strength.
Difficult synastry does not necessarily mean the end of a relationship but rather sets areas where each person has a lot to learn and grow. So long as couples make themselves aware of potential challenges and commit to honest communication, they can achieve a balance that will complement energies and make a relationship stronger.
