‘Harry – The Lost Prince’: German documentary reveals the Duke of Sussex and wife Meghan’s ‘life in exile’

A new German documentary, “Harry – The Lost Prince,” which examines Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s life since leaving the British royal family, directed by Ulrike Grunewald, is set to air on December 3, 2023.
The documentary explores the couple’s transition to life in Montecito, California, and the impact of their departure on the royal family, describing their new life in exile, the Daily Mail reported.
It features interviews and explores the challenges the royal couple has faced. Grunewald suggests the most damaging information comes from within the royal circle.
“The worst accusations always come from their own circle… Revelations that shocked the royal family came directly from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle,” she told The Guardian.
The film also examines the changes within the royal family following Queen Elizabeth II’s death and King Charles III’s health problems, including the strained relationship between Harry and his father. German media initially criticised the couple’s 2020 exit, but their reception during the 2023 Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, which Prince Harry introduced, was much more positive.
The documentary also brings attention to the personal impact of leaving royal life. Meghan Markle recently commented on the transition in Marie Claire, a French magazine, “It’s really easy. Just think about how you’d want someone to treat you… how would you want someone to open their arms to you?” she questioned.
The film revisits previous interviews and statements made by the couple, including their Netflix docuseries where Meghan Markle discussed the formality of the royal family, and their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey where they made accusations of racism and neglect. Meghan Markle said that there were “several conversations” about their son Archie’s skin tone.
The documentary also notes Meghan Markle’s recent Thanksgiving dinner for Afghan women in Los Angeles, organized with her charity, Archewell’s ‘The Welcome Project’.
She said during the event, “You miss home, you miss your country, and also can find comfort in the new community that you have here.”
