Lucknow has always been a hunting ground for two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu. After a disappointing run at the Paris Olympics and China Masters, she is back in the City of Nawabs to regain her lost touch.
Speaking to TOI after defeating Anmol Kharb 21-17, 21-15 in the first round of the Syed Modi India International Badminton Championship 2024, the ace shuttler shared her experiences and future plans. Excerpts:
You have been playing in the Syed Modi tournament for over 10 years now. How important is this event for you?
I’m happy to be back here after a gap. I couldn’t play last year because of an injury. It’s always nice to play in Lucknow, and I always feel happy competing for this prestigious trophy.
How do you rate this tournament for upcoming talent?
It really provides experience and exposure to budding players as they get to compete with a lot of strong contenders, which gives them a chance to improve their game.
Who do you think could be the next PV Sindhu in India?
There are a lot of junior players coming up with immense potential. They just have to continue working hard, and with the right guidance, they will shine in no time.
How important are doubles events in today’s badminton?
For everyone, their event is important. Singles are very important to me. When you ask doubles players, they’ll tell you doubles are equally significant.
Your thoughts on your stint in the China Masters?
It was a good tournament, but unfortunately, I lost a few close games. I need to rectify my mistakes and come back stronger.
After the disappointment in Paris, what are you targeting next?
I’m looking forward to tournaments like the World Championships. The Syed Modi tournament is the last event on the 2024 calendar, and I want to find my groove to perform well in the Malaysia, India, and Indonesia Open next year.
